El Bicho – the road to the expedition vehicle

The tiresome topic of windows

Like everyone building on a limited budget, I was naturally looking for a good and affordable window. While browsing Amazon, I came across a solid PVC window measuring 80 x 50 cm with a frame depth of 5 cm. At a price of €80 including shipping, I didn't hesitate long and ordered the window.

I had previously discovered the window mounting hardware on Amazon, the kind most overlanders with real glass windows have. It only cost €12 for a pair. I was very curious to see if I would be able to install the hardware on the window. After a few days, both the window and the hardware were delivered. I was very surprised to discover that there is apparently a standard size for window hardware.

So I assembled everything, adjusted it, and suddenly I had a window with a 50 mm frame depth that could be opened like an expensive expedition vehicle window.

I was naturally delighted with this success and contacted the window importer in Spain. After a few weeks' wait, they delivered five more windows, which were special because they arrived without any fittings or holes in the frame. I also paid a small surcharge of approximately €15 per window for impact-resistant safety glass.

All in all, I've now paid about €600 for six windows for my expedition vehicle. With safety glass.

Here's a video I filmed showing what modifications were made to the window:

I have compiled and answered all the frequently asked questions here. Here are the answers:

1. Do the windows have approval?

No, at that price, of course, there's no certification. Anyone needing certification can exchange the glass for stamped glass at extremfenster.de. My windows, however, are made of impact-resistant safety glass.

Regarding the issue of approval, it should be noted that windows with a stamp are only required if seating is registered in the structure.

2. Where did the windows come from?

I'm buying the windows from a company in Spain; their WhatsApp contact is below. If you don't speak Spanish, you can use www.deepl.com to translate texts almost perfectly. Shipping from Spain for 5 windows costs approximately €200. Website: ECO-BLU https://eco-blu.es/

3. What kind of windows are these?

These are inverted tilt-and-turn basement windows. I ordered them without hinges and without locks (so no holes in the frame) and without drainage holes, but in the impact-resistant version. The tilt-and-turn hardware is available on Amazon, two for €25. I've tried them and they fit. Locks cost €10, also on Amazon. Links are below.

4. What makes the windows interesting?

The windows are interesting to me for the following reasons:
– 50 mm Rahmenstärke
– Standardfenster, jeder Glaser auf der Welt kann sie reparieren
– komplett aus PVC, keine Kältebrücke
– Sicherheitsglas ist möglich
– Scheibe mit Zulassung ist möglich

5. How will you install the windows?
Here is a drawing of how I will do the installation:*6. Do the windows have pressure equalization? *

No, that's not possible in that price range.
