„Washing dishes with a machine uses on average 50 percent less water and 28 percent less energy than washing dishes by hand,“ according to a comparative study by the University of Bonn involving 200 households in Germany, Italy, Sweden and Great Britain. Besides saving energy, a dishwasher also saves time, provided the dishes are not pre-rinsed and come out clean and dry. A small dishwasher suitable for an overlander can even clean dishes using only 5-7 liters of water.
Disadvantages of the dishwasher
Stubborn dirt residue, especially in pots and pans, is easier to remove by hand. Dishwashers often struggle with this. Dishwashers also require more chemicals than washing by hand. And of course, a dishwasher takes up a fair amount of space, although very small models have come onto the market in recent years, some of which don't even require a fixed water connection.
